There was a relatively small patch of land on the Wyhor continent at the junction of the Nova Empire, Sardu Caliphate, and the Theocratic Kingdom, shaped like a diamond with a 600-mile edge. For the public, this place didn't exist. Air routes and railroads skirted that area, thanks to the cloud of fumes and miasma hanging overhead. Solid emanations of corruption filled the air right above the ground. There were no sources of clean water, roads, or any official population: only the piles of trash and organic waste dumped there by three countries on giant flying dump trains for the last 300 years.

A man clad in black robes was walking the air above the forbidden zone, holding the hand of a teenaged girl. He had a proud stature and a piercing stare. His beard had grown over the last two weeks, and his chest was barely covered by the tattered robe of a priest.

Saldona fidgeted, resigning herself to being dragged around like luggage. Over the last two weeks of traveling around Karn, she had seen more than in her 16 years of life.

"You still haven't answered who you are, mister. Are you a hero from some legend? You walk in the air, remove slave brands, kill powerful monsters with your bare hands..."

Something below drew the man's attention, and he started to descend.

"It's a good question, Sally. Or should I call you by your full name, Saldona?" The girl gave an ambiguous nod. "Then I'll call you Sally. Due to certain reasons, the gods of Karn owed me a debt that couldn't be repaid in money. They offered to reincarnate my soul by using the System's special options, but they didn't consider its reaction. After testing me, the System immediately realized that no body of a newborn could withstand the power of my mind, my mental strength. That's why it chose a different approach, turning me into something called a lineal subsystem."

Saldona was doing her best to follow the thread of the conversation, but she lacked the necessary knowledge.

"I don't understand, mister."

"When a person becomes too powerful, the heavens uplift them from the lower planes of existence so as not to interfere with the natural course of events. Is this clearer?"

"You could have said that in the first place instead of cursing in gibberish. A subsystem? Mental strength?"

"It would be easier to describe me as a demigod without his power but with certain abilities. That child, Loan, thanks to his stats, his stubborn personality, and his gift has linked to my lineal subsystem, becoming a terminal connecting me to the physical world. He isn't my reincarnation, but an outside person who joined my path via the System. As its leader and founder, I develop it while traveling. Others, like Loan, can follow me."

After coming down, the man immediately activated the miracle of Cleansing, purifying the air across many feet from stench, miasma, and harmful emanations. Then he put Saldona on the ground. She was trying to keep up with him.

"And that path of the lineal subsystem you mentioned, what's that?"

He gave her a fillip.
